Learning by living. Teaching through doing.
Cala Cainnte | Language Haven* is a place where Gaelic can live, thrive, and grow in Nova Scotia. The project brings together professionals invested in the research, development and delivery of the Gàidhlig aig Baile | Gaelic in the Home (GAB) immersion methodology. We support Gaelic learners and educators throughout the province, creating spaces where GAB lives and is nurtured - by, with and for - community.
*Formerly known as the Gàidhlig aig Baile Institute
Cala Cainnte will focus on three broad areas of impact:
Offering home-based immersion programs to create new speakers quickly
Providing training and professional development for Gaelic Nova Scotia and beyond
training new tutors/teachers
supporting current tutors/teachers
Conducting social learning research, continuing development of GAB, and completing evaluation/assessments of programming and methodology
Internationally recognized, we are innovators in language revitalization and cultural & community development, contributing to a strong, inclusive, and vibrant Nova Scotia Gàidhealtachd | a place where language and culture both thrive.
We are committed to the revitalization of the Gàidhlig language and lifeways through immersive, community-based learning. We value intergenerational knowledge, cultural integrity, and the deep connection between language, land, and identity. Our work is rooted in hospitality, mutual respect, and a belief in the strength and resilience of our communities. We welcome all who seek to engage with Gàidhlig culture in a spirit of openness, humility, and belonging.
We warmly welcome individuals of all ages, races (including multiracial identities), religions, genders, sexual orientations, and body types.
We recognize that Scottish Gàidhlig is the Heritage Language of several hundred thousand Nova Scotians and they have a right to learn and speak it. We also believe strongly that everyone regardless of their linguistic heritage has a right to learn and speak Gàidhlig and we welcome all Nova Scotians to participate.
Rooted in the Gàidhlig values of hospitality, belonging, and mutual respect, our events are spaces where everyone is invited to bring their full selves and feel a sense of connection and community. Everyone belongs here.
We recognize that to live, work, and learn on unceded Mi’kmaw territory is a profound privilege. We acknowledge that our presence here today is made possible by the Mi’kmaq People’s enduring relationship with and care for this land - expressed through ceremony, stories, songs cultural practices, and ways of life passed down over thousands of years.
We are grateful for the generosity and friendship extended by the Mi’kmaq to the first Gàidhlig settlers, which undoubtedly contributed to their survival and to our continued presence today. As learners, speakers, and stewards of the Gàidhlig language, we honour that history while also acknowledging the complex and often painful legacies of colonization.
We recognize that language and culture are deeply rooted in place, and that revitalization work carries responsibilities. We affirm that we are all Treaty People, and we are committed to upholding the spirit and intent of Peace and Friendship with the Mi’kmaq and with all cultural communities who share this land.
We are excited to announce An Àirigh | The Shieling our new live-in immersion program, running from October 2025 - February 2026. 8-10 participants will live for four months alongside skilled instructors and facilitators in a shared home in Richmond County.
